Introduction to Operational Risk* (Accredited Training)

Operational Risk (an SII IAQ technical paper Unit 10) forms one half of the Advanced Certificate in Operational Risk and is designed for individuals working in operations, risk or IT, who wish to develop their managerial, professional and technical skills as financial services specialists. To gain the full Advanced Certificate in Operational Risk you will need to also sit Module 2 - Advanced Operational Risk.

Course Description

This 2-day intensive fully accredited training course is designed for new market entrants, graduates, and those in industry seeking to enhance their career in the risk arena. The course describes what risk is and what it means to the financial services industry. It describes the three common categories of financial risk – Credit, Market, and Operational - providing a brief contextual overview of the first two and focusing particularly on the latter. Operational risk and some of the more important aspects of its management are covered in the second session of day 2.

This course is both a learning and revision programme intended as part of the requisite study period in preparation for sitting the relevant assessment/examination.

This opening session introduces the basics. It explains why risk in general is a subject of concern in all industries and all walks of life. It then focuses on what financial risk means and where the category of operational risk fits into the overall picture. Finally, it describes some of the high profile events that have served to highlight the critical need to understand and manage operational risk effectively.

Learning Objectives

Participants to the course will be enabled to appreciate the key issues and practical solutions within risk management.  Addressing all major risk issues, participants will gain an appreciation of key risk topics and solutions.

Methodology

Based upon the SII Operational Risk IAQ Unit 10 syllabus, the learning environment is trainer led, classroom style lectures featuring intensive use of up-to-date and relevant industry experience, know-how and real life case studies.

Knowledge Pre-Requisites

It is expected that participants will have some familiarity with financial services.
